Womens’ FAQ
Here are a few questions that are specific to female waxing treatments. Please have a look at the mens’ wax faq as there will be relevant information for women too.
Q: What is hot wax?
A: Hot wax is applied in a thick layer and left to set. It is gentler because the heat allows the hair follicle to open up before the wax is peeled off. Hot wax removes more stubborn hair and provides a superior finish.
Q: Where do you use hot wax?
A: We only use hot wax for bikini, underarm, and facial hair. We use strip wax for arms and legs. This means a thin layer of wax is applied and removed with a paper strip.
Q. How much hair growth do I need before waxing?
A: The hair should be no longer than 1cm, but don’t worry if it needs trimmed – we’ll do that for you.
Q. Do I have to go on all fours to have the bum area waxed?
A: No, it is all done while lying down.
Q. Do I keep my underwear on?
We supply disposable knickers for bikini and extended bikini waxes, or you can wear your own underwear, although there may be a risk of getting creams or wax on the fabric.
For G-string, Brazilian, and Hollywood waxes we prefer you remove your underwear.
Q. Can I get waxed during my period?
We don’t mind if you don’t mind, but please only wear a tampon and use the wipes provided. Bear in mind waxing can be slightly more painful when you are premenstrual or menstruating.
Q: What should I do to prepare for my waxing treatment?
A: Gently exfoliate and moisturise the day before your treatment. This will prepare your skin and remove dead skin cells, making your wax more comfortable. Don’t use a sunbed/solarium for a couple of days prior to your appointment as this will sensitise the area.
Q: How long will my hair removal treatment last?
A: Everyone is different, but all of us have three cycles of hair growth. After your first session, you may experience re-growth sooner. This is not the same hair that has just been waxed, it is the next cycle, or perhaps hair that was missed because it was too short for the wax to grip. To help get all the hair into the same cycle, it is recommended that the first three visits are relatively close together. Thereafter we recommend you return every 4-6 weeks. Don’t be tempted to shave or tweeze between waxes. Following this method, you will get the best and longest lasting results.
Q: I’ve heard that waxing can be quite painful. Is there anything I can do?
A: Using hot wax is much less painful than strip wax, but some people take an Ibuprofen or a Nurofen half an hour before the treatment (consult your doctor and follow instructions on the packet!) Never drink alcohol before waxing as it thins the blood. Occasionally spots of blood come to the surface with coarser hair. You tend to be more sensitive if you period is due or if you have a hangover.
Q: How do I get the most out of my waxing treatment?
A: After the first week use exfoliating gloves two or three times a week on the area. Don’t use a natural loofah – bacteria thrive in the natural fibres. Always moisturise after your shower, preferably with a tea tree or lavender cream, great for their antibacterial properties. This allows the new hair to break through the surface of your skin and will minimise ingrown hairs.
Q: Can I have waxing done after work?
A: Yes! Designer Waxing is open until 8 PM on Thursdays, and there are Femfresh wipes in the room for you to feel your best after a long day.
Q: What about waxing aftercare?
A: Avoid sun exposure, deodorant, highly perfumed lotions and potions, hot showers, sunbeds (for 48 hours), swimming pools, saunas, spas, and strenuous exercise (sweating) for 24 hours. Your pores are open, so you should avoid anything that would irritate the area or encourage bacteria.
